SEO Strategies for Fashion Websites

Whether you’re just starting out with a fresh new site or you know your current site needs some SEO TLC but you don’t really know where to start, fashion SEO should be somewhere close to the top of your marketing to-do list.

What do we mean by fashion SEO?

Taking it back to basics, SEO is search engine optimisation. Doing the things you need to do on your website to make sure that people searching for your products or services on Google actually see your site – and hopefully click onto it!

Fashion SEO is just the more niche distinction of doing this for a fashion-based website. So, whether you’re selling running shoes or sustainable knickers, it’s all the same principles when it comes to getting your SEO right.

Where can you start?

Consider Your SEO Keywords

We all know that you need good quality content on your site for SEO. But what does ‘good quality’ actually mean?

It comes down to several factors and this includes things like relevance and keywords. So, the words in your content need to pair up with the kind of words people are using to search in Google.

There are lots of different tactics when it comes to keywords. If you’re a fashion site, the keyword ‘black dress’is a very high competition search that will see you up against some of the biggest names – and therefore biggest marketing budgets – in the game. So, it’s a good idea to think about long-tail keywords you could aim for that will actually bring you some traction.

For example, instead of ‘black dress’, you might want to narrow it down a little further to ‘long backless black slip dress’. It’s much more specific, so you’ll have less competition and your page should be particularly relevant for this keyword.

If you’re yet to explore the free tool – Google Keyword Planner, this is a great place to start – as well as simply doing the Google searches yourself and seeing what kind of searches come up.

Add a Blog to Your Site

Is blogging dead?

You might hear people discussing this a lot but the facts remain that right now, content is still king. And a great way to get long-form, relevant, keyword-rich, engaging content onto your site regularly and consistently is through a blog. Blogging regularly works to get your site impressions and clicks, it just does.

Think about how you ended up here!

Optimise Your Product Pages

If you’re a fashion site, you’ll likely have lots of product pages packed with your latest pieces. This is great. But are they working for you as they should?

SEO is complicated and it’s not easy to keep up with all the changing rules and tips. But one thing is for sure, site and page speed is important. So, make sure your product pages are optimised to work the fastest they can, make sure they work on mobile just as well as on desktop and make sure they’re easy to follow and use. Don’t make people work hard to buy from you. Make it easy for them.

You also want to make sure you’ve optimised all the images on your site and this includes your product images. Not only do your images need to look professional and exceptionally high resolution with optimised dimension and format, but you also need to make sure your file name and image tags are using your specific product-based keywords.

Getting your website up and running is only the beginning. Fashion SEO is a job in itself when it comes to making sure your site works its best for you. Remember, you don’t want to ‘leave it until later’ because it takes a good couple of months at least for your SEO efforts to start giving you results. Sometimes even longer.

Don’t delay! Start your fashion SEO journey today!
